新藤兼人、シナリオライターから映画監督への宿命

新藤兼人が、自ら、映画｢愛妻物語｣を語るのを聞いた〔NHK知るを楽しむ 人生の歩き方　NHK教育テレビ3月放送“新藤兼人｢わが仕事人生｣”（水曜日 午後1025〜1050）〕。94歳の現役映画監督が、半世紀前1951年（昭和26年）の第1回監督作品を語る肉声に接することが出来るのは、奇跡にちかい。文明の利器と長生きに感謝します。

物語は、事実７割フィクション3割という。撮影所の脚本研究生時代、シナリオを第二稿、第三稿と書き直しに忙殺されている最中、妻が結核で倒れ、吐血したというのに看病にも行けぬ。明日決定稿が仕上がるという日、妻は「一生、シナリオを書いて」という励ましの言葉を残して死んでいく。

このあたりのシーンは、微妙に事実とフィクションが入り組んでいるが、妻のモデルは、溝口健二監督のスクリプター(撮影の記録係)を勤めていた久慈孝子さん。27歳の半人前のシナリオライターと23歳のスクリプターの若い夫婦の誕生でした。

久慈さんがあって、シナリオライターの新藤兼人がある。

｢新藤君、これは脚本ではありません。ただのストーリーです。芝居がまったく書けていません。まったくダメですね｣。頼み込んで弟子入りしていた溝口健二監督に、渾身の思いで書き上げたシナリオを見てもらうと、冷ややかな目つきで言下に言い放たれる。

大きなショックでした。顔あげることもできず、つき返されたシナリオを掴むと玄関を飛び出し、どこをどう歩いて家に帰ったのか記憶にないという。｢ドラマがない｣、｢人間が描かれていない｣との溝口監督の指摘は、新藤さんのシナリオはシナリオになっていないという決定的な評価。どん底に落ちて這い上がれない。絶望と失意の中に沈む。

このとき、かたわらに、久慈さんが居ました。｢また、書けばいいじゃない｣と、久慈さんは、にっこり笑って、また、あっさりと言う。新藤さんは、遠い記憶をまさぐりながら、｢久慈さんがわたしを救ってくれました｣と述懐する。映像だから伝わる心のうち。

新藤さんは、その後、売れっ子のシナリオライターになるが、心の中にしっくりしない感情が疼いている。それは、久慈さんへのレクエイムでした。それで、売れないシナリオライターと、夫を支え、亡くなる妻のことを書いたのが｢愛妻物語｣であった。

あとは、映画にするだけが、新藤さんは、妻への思い入れが強く、誰かほかの監督にゆだねることは、まるで妻の肌に触られるような感じがして絶対にいやだという。ここで、“映画監督”新藤兼人の誕生となる。

34年新興キネマ現像部に入り、美術部を経てシナリオライターに。50年に吉村公三郎、殿山泰司らと独立プロダクション「近代映画協会」設立。51年『愛妻物語』で監督デビュー。61年『裸の島』がモスクワ国際映画祭ブランプリ受賞。2002年文化勲章受賞。主な監督作品に『原爆の子』『鬼婆』『北斎漫画』『 東綺譚』『午後の遺言状』『ふくろう』など。著書に『愛妻記』（岩波現代文庫）、『弔辞』『シナリオ人生』（岩波新書）、『作劇術』（岩波書店）など、著作集に『進藤兼人の足跡』（全6巻、岩波書店）がある。
