佐治敬三を、堺屋太一が語る

昭和後期を代表する大檀那佐治敬三さんを、大阪生まれで、万国博覧会や大阪築城四百年記念行事などで佐治さんとおつき合いのあった堺屋太一さんが、その人物を語るという、こんな絶妙な取り合わせは、そうざらにはあるものではありません（NHK知るを楽しむ NHK教育テレビ“私のこだわり人物伝”2月4回放送）。

語られる佐治敬三さんはもちろん、偉大ですが、語る堺屋太一さんも凄いお人や。佐治さんの真骨頂をあますところなく活写してくれました。どれもこれも興奮してしまうほどのエピソードばかりですが、ここでは、二つだけ紹介させてください。

東京港区赤坂にあるサントリーホールは、二千六人収容の大ホールと最大四百三十二人収容の小ホールがある典型的なコンサート・ホールです。賢明なる読者の方々は、何をいまさら、分かりきった文章を連ねるのか、といぶかると思います。が、『典型的なコンサート・ホール』にいま一度ご注目ください。

この大ホールには、一方に大きな客席があり、舞台の両脇や背後にも少人数の客席があります。そして天井には緞帳などの吊り物が一切なく、反響板がついています。実はこれが本物のシンフォニーホール、“音楽専門”劇場です。こうした形のホールは、日本では大阪のザ・シンフォニーホールなどごく僅かしかないのです。

日本の自治体や公的団体は、80、90年代の好況時には、お金にまかせて沢山の文化会館や何々ホール、美術館、博物舘などを造りました。しかし、そうした施設はたいていが｢多目的ホール｣や団体展用の美術館です。

多目的ホールというのは、先ず芝居をするための回り舞台があり、緞帳や大道具吊りの装置がついています。これではコンサートをする時には、音が上方に逃げてしまいます。本物のシンフォニーの演奏効果は発揮できないのです。

結果的に、日本の多くの公共文化施設は、｢何でもできないことはないが、何をやっても最適ではない｣という形になっています。｢多目的ホール｣とは、｢無目的ホール｣でもあるのです。

さて、サントリーという会社は、子会社等連結決算で2005年度の売上は1兆3700億円、日本の企業売上ランキングで90番ぐらいですが、サントリーほど文化的貢献をしている企業はそれほど多くありません。文化的貢献には、福祉や環境、教育、国際関係、そして技術開発などがありますが、サントリーが特に文化的貢献に熱心なことは確かです。

それができたのは、サントリーの経営が良かったことと、佐治敬三という文化好きの経営者がいたことと、この会社が、鳥井・佐治一族のファミリー企業だ、といことが見逃せない要素でしょう。

かっては、20年ほど前までは、ファミリー企業は｢古い形態｣といわれていましたが、80年代から考え方が変りました。企業経営は、縦割り専門家たちが相談しあって標準的な製品を供給する巨大企業がよいと信じられていたのですが、今では、必ずしもそうとは限らない。むしろ、会社のことを、自分のことのように考える人、つまりオーナーファミリーによって経営された方が効果的だ、いわれるようになったのです。

｢人間は自分のお金を使う時には、他人のお金を使う時よりも利巧だ｣といいます。ファミリー企業のオーナーたちは、企業のお金を自分のように大切につかうのです。以上、経済にも文化にも強い堺屋太一さんの講義でした。
