乃木希典の真の姿とは、

東京ミッドタウンの３月30日オープンをひかえ、六本木界隈は、いま、注目のエリアだ。ちょっと、人込みを離れて、乃木坂へ向かうと旧乃木邸にいたる。隣の乃木神社には、梅がひそやかに花をつけていた。

乃木希典の生涯を思うと、いつも頭が混乱してくる。司馬遼太郎の「坂の上の雲」の中で、旅順攻撃における乃木は無能との解釈。畏れ多くも、それ、本当かなあ、と納得しない心が、私の胸の片隅にある。

この問題は、さておいて、明治天皇大葬の大正元年（1912）9月13日夜、妻静子ともに自刃した凄烈なイメージと、若い頃の遊蕩生活とが、これが、また、なんともしっくりと結びつかない。そのモヤモヤを楽にしてくれる記述に出遭った。

毎日新聞日曜連載中の古川薫著｢斜陽に立つ｣（安久利徳・画）21回、22回及び23回で、この乃木の問題行動についてよく記述されている。それは名古屋鎮台大弐心得職の辞表提出から始まる。乃木の唐突な辞表提出は一度や二度ではない。それも病気などあいまいな理由ばかり。

乃木の背後にはそれなりに事情があるのだろうが、それに耐えられないと思いやいなや衝動的に身を処す彼独特の性向が見られる。伝記類の多くは、このへん行動について詳述することを避けているのが多い。

著者は、その理由は、乃木が遊蕩の果てに追い込まれた結果の辞表だという判断にいたるのである。そして、乃木の遊蕩の事実を知ったうえで、一個の人間としての乃木の行動の原因を見つめるのである。

厳格な父から無情にしごかれ、母親までがきびしい躾の鞭をあてる家庭で、抑圧されていたものが、一挙に噴き出したものが遊蕩に向かったとみる。しかも、もともと軍人は嫌いで、文人として立ちたいとする少年時代からの強い希望を、結局、放棄させられたという無念の鬱積を爆発させたといえるのである。

しかし、激動の時代が、乃木の遊蕩を止める。

明治8年、乃木希典は、熊本鎮台歩兵第十四連隊長心得を仰せつかる。このときから、冷水を浴びたように、希典の全身から遊興のにおいが消えた。遊び惚けている彼に与えられた任務にひそむ深刻な状況は、希典を青ざめさせるに十分だった。反政府軍の蜂起が、目前に待ち構えていた。
