グランドキャニオン『スカイウォーク』オープン

3月28日に、米国アリゾナ州グランドキャニオン ウエストリム（西壁）に『スカイウォーク』がオープンした。高さ1219メートルの絶壁から半円状（正しくは、片持ち梁‘かたもちばり’）で20メートル空中に突き出た総ガラス張り回廊を名づけて『スカイウォーク』と呼ぶ。

ニューヨーク市エンパイヤーステーツビルの3倍の高さから、足下はガラスで素通しの回廊を宙に飛び出して行く。私は、百万円貰ってもご免こうむります。想像するだけでも
下っ腹がジワジワしてきます。なにしろ、東京タワーだって、窓際へは、よう怖くて寄り付きませんので。ちなみに、『スカイウォーク』の渡り賃というのかな、料金は一人あたり25ドルです。

渡り初め式に臨んで、バズ・アルドリン氏がその第一歩をしるした。1969年7月19日、人類史上初めて月面に着陸し大きな一歩をしるしたアポロ11号で、人類として初めて月に降り立ち、無事に帰還した宇宙飛行士の1人である、あのバズ・アルドリン氏である。

『スカイウォーク』は目新しい観光スッポトとして人気を呼ぶものと予想されるが、スタートから問題を抱えている。地元のネイティブ・アメリカンから反対の声があがっている。天から与えられた神聖な景観を醜いものとし、グランドキャニオン全体の環境をも破壊するものだと。もっともですね。良くあるケース。

しかし、『スカイウォーク』の開設に動いたのもネイティブ・アメリカンなのである。グランドキャニオンの ウエストリム（西壁）は、ノースリム（北壁）やサウスリム（南壁）にくらべて、観光の目玉に乏しく、観光客は多くなかった。3000万ドルのプロジェクトはラスベガスの旅行業者と組んで、開発推進派のネイティブ・アメリカンが動いたのです。

よく、地球と仲良く共生していこうと、言うけど、地球から言わせれば、人間は地球に寄生しているのであって、｢おいおい、そんなに乱暴に扱わないくれたまえ｣、と悲鳴をあげているでしょう。結局、人類は、地球を食い潰しているのです。
