毎日新聞で“野坂昭如の｢七転び八起き｣”連載始まる

野坂昭如さんが、2003年に脳梗塞で倒れてから、4年ぶりで、私たちの前にその健在なお姿をみせた。私は、むかしから、はちゃめちゃな野坂昭如さんがむちゃくちゃに好きだ。ご活躍を待っていたので、いく度目かのデビューがたまらなく嬉しい。

2月6日、毎日新聞朝刊で、“野坂昭如の｢七転び八起き｣”の連載が始まった。サブタイトルに｢リハビリ紳士｣とあり、奥様が2月3日に撮ったばかりの写真が、紙面を飾っている。屋外で、帽子、スッテキの出で立ちで、椅子に座っていて、顔色がよいのが見てとれる。

この連載は、構成が、少し手がこんでいて、オーストラリア在住の信原彰夫氏が、国際電話やファックスで野坂氏とやり取りした内容をまとめ、アメリカ在住の黒田征太郎氏が読後にイラストを描くという段取りで掲載が進められていく。野坂の親友黒田征太郎のイラストも楽しみである。次回は2月27日掲載とのこと。

野坂氏は、自分自身のリハビリを通して、日本の医療制度が抱える難題に直面する。週3回の病院でのリハビリが、現在では、週１回に減らされた。重症の新しい患者が増えると、トコロテン式に自宅リハビリに転換させられてしまう厳しい現状がある。それを野坂流に見つめる。

1967年、野坂さんが、黒いサングラスの出で立ちで歌手デビューしてとき、正直言って、軽佻浮薄の徒との印象をもった。野坂さんのことを、作品を手にすることもなく、なんで、直木賞作家なのと訝っていた。頭が化石だった。作家はこうあるべきという。

作品を読んで、驚いた。椅子から転げ落ちそうになった。その文体の厳かさ、格調の高さ、濃密さ、に比べて、野坂さんの外観とのギャップに、こんどは腰を抜かしました。それから、作品はもちろん、その生い立ち、人間愛に裏付けされた思想を知るに至って、一時でも、野坂さんのことを、軽い人だと思った自分を拳骨でなぐりました。

作品の中には、『骨餓身峠死人葛』、『死屍河原水子草』、『砂絵呪縛後日怪談』、『乱離骨灰鬼胎草』など、一見おぞましい表題の作品も少なくないが、いずれも、野坂さんの深い悲しみから、生まれてきたような気がする。
