最近のスピリチュアルブームについて

題名は覚えていませんが、野坂昭如の短編小説のなかで、貧乏長屋に住む辻占い師が仲間に、客のことを、さげすみながら｢亡者｣と呼んでいる場面がありました。迷える人は、もう亡者なのです。亡者が増えれば増えるほど、辻占い師の商売は繁盛します。

ちなみに、大辞泉によると、[亡者]（１）〔専門〕仏 死んだ人。特に、まだ成仏せずに迷っている魂。（2）金銭や権力などに対する執念にとりつかれている者。

平成の世では、江戸時代の辻占い師の役を、なんの臆面もなく、テレビメディアが引受けています。いつの世でも、亡者を相手にする商売は繁盛するものなので、もう、作る方は、見栄も外聞もあったもんじゃない。科学的見識などを求めるのは酷でしょう。

論点｢スピリチュアルブームを考える｣（毎日新聞“主張・提言・討論の広場”2月17日掲載）のなかで、島田裕巳氏は、現在のスピリチュアルブームを担う江原啓介氏と、サリン事件直前まで、テレビに頻繁に登場していた霊能者（とされる）の宜保愛子氏との時代的役割の違いを指摘しています。これが、膝をポンと叩きたくなるほど分かりやすいのです。

島田裕巳氏によれば、今日のスピリチュアルブームには、伝統的な霊観念の衰退、ないしは希薄化ということが関係しているという。伝統的な霊観念というのは、先祖の霊、すなわち、先祖が作り上げた家が一番大切である。ないがしろにされた霊の祟りによって病や不幸がもたされると考えるのである。

そこで、病や不幸を取り除くには、先祖の霊を正しく供養しなければならと説く立場の一人が宜保愛子氏であるという。ところが、近年、核家族化が急速に進行し、家の比重がいちじるしく軽くなり、先祖の霊の祟りということに現実味が無くなってしまった。いまでは家のしがらみに苦しむ人は殆んどいないと云える。

その反作用として、むしろ、人々は、家という支えを失ったことに苦しむことになる。かてて加えて、未婚者の増加や少子化の進行で、家の存在自体が危うくなってきた。それにともなって、霊の観念についても｢個人化｣の影響が強くなってきた。

今、霊が問題にされるとき、それは家の先祖の霊ではなく、個人の前世の霊である。先祖が出てきたとしても、祖父母などごく近しい祖父母の存在に限られる。このような個人化傾向の霊現象によるスピリチュアルブームの立役者の一人が江原啓介氏だと、島田裕巳氏は位置付けるのである。
