貝原益軒｢養生訓｣の現代的意義

｢養生訓｣とは、いかにも題名からして古めかしい。自分には、全く関係ない本だと決めつけていました。｢養生訓｣に入りあげている友人もいましたが、自分には、全く関係ないと耳をかしませんでした。しかし、歴史家の立川昭二氏の解説にふれて、蒙を啓かされました。

いま日本では、超高齢社会を迎えて、老いをいかに生きるかが問われています。

｢養生訓｣は、単に健康法を説いたハウツーものでは、ないという点です。ただ単に長生きをするために養生をするのではなく、真に人生の意義を考え、また、おのれの志、社会へのコミットメントを全うするためには、長生きが必要だから、養生が説かれているのです。

また、貝原益軒の生き方そのものが、人生のお手本です。

益軒自身は、生まれつき虚弱で、生涯病気に苦しみ、また、夫人東軒の病弱にもつき合い、そのために、絶えず健康に留意し、医療に心がけ、体質改善に努力し、克己修養の努力のおかげで八十五歳という長寿を得、ライフワークを完成させたのです。

｢養生訓｣には、晩年になって幸福を得た人の人生観、つまり人生の価値をその後半に置いた生き方が、その根底に流れています。高齢化社会を生きる私たちにとって、最適の指針となります。ありがたい先達に恵まれて、私たちは幸せです。

今日では、養生の意味は、おもに病後の手当て、あるいは、あるいは保養や摂生という意味で使われていますが、江戸の人たちにとって、ここが凄い点ですが、養生とは、単なる病後の手当てや病気予防の健康法ではないのです。もっと広く深い意味をもっていました。

｢養生｣とは、いま流行の健康法という狭い意味ではなく、人の生き方にかかわる重要事柄であり、“どう生きるかのか”、“何のために生きるか”という意味をもった｢人生指針｣でした。｢養生｣いう理念は、江戸を生きていた人々が共有していた文化でもありました。
